Sioux County awards Monroe Canyon road repair, accepts crusher sale and approves bridge repair quotes

Sioux County commissioners moved forward on several road and bridge projects and equipment sales during meetings from March through June 2013.
At a public meeting on May 1 and later sessions, the board accepted a $6,001 bid from Gary Thayer to purchase the county’s gravel crusher after three bids were opened and considered. The acceptance was recorded by motion and roll call.
For road repairs, Paul Reed Construction presented two options for repairing 1.3 miles of Monroe Canyon Road; the project was advertised for bids and, following the bid opening process, the board accepted Paul Reed Construction & Supply’s bid of $88,720 for the Monroe Canyon Road project (motion recorded and approved by roll call). The board also opened three bids for Monroe Canyon Road repair earlier and later formally accepted the Paul Reed bid.
Regarding county bridges, Jim Henderson of R&C Welding submitted a quote to repair the bridge on County Road 7 over the PID ditch. The board approved R&C Welding’s proposal for repairs not to exceed $22,987.76, with the work scheduled for a September–October timeframe.
Separately, the board signed Resolution 13-2 authorizing fracture-critical bridge inspections with the Nebraska Department of Roads, a formal step to comply with state inspection requirements.
Road Foreman Gordon Mathis and Road Superintendent Gary Thayer briefed the board on equipment rental/lease offers and options for belly-dump trailers and other equipment; the board discussed rental and procurement but tabled some purchases for further review. The board also approved hiring two road employees (one full-time and one part-time seasonal) on recommendation of Foreman Mathis.
The board directed staff to inspect gravel pits and return cost estimates for crushing contracts and set project advertisement and bid timelines where required. Work scheduling, safety measures and equipment-use policies were reviewed during a road-department safety meeting earlier in the year. The board's actions and the signed resolutions set the county to proceed with the advertised repairs and procurements pending contractor performance and standard project oversight.
