Sioux County approves several road contracts, rebids and repairs; One and Six Year Road Plan adopted

Across 2012 meetings the Sioux County Board approved gravel hauling and crushing contracts, accepted low bids for crushing, approved a Stop sign installation, adopted the One and Six Year Road Plan and advanced resurfacing and equipment purchases for Monroe Canyon and other roads.
Sioux County commissioners spent significant meeting time in 2012 on road maintenance, gravel procurement and projects. In multiple meetings the board opened bids, approved low bidders and instructed road staff to follow up on recommendations.
In February the board approved the bid from Kriha & Kriha, LLC to haul 6,700 tons of gravel and instructed the county attorney to prepare a contract. In March the board opened eight gravel crushing bids and identified Mark Chrisman, Gumbo Gravel and Buettner Construction as the three low bids; in April the board accepted Mark Chrisman’s crushing bid pending a signed contract. Several related actions included approval of a resolution to install a Stop sign at SB and S6 Roads and direction for a study of Moody Road to determine legal status and potential closure.
Road Superintendent Gary Thayer and Road Foreman Kelly Strain regularly presented options including leasing equipment, contracting gravel pits and evaluating resurfacing approaches. In August the board received a presentation on a resurfacing machine and tentatively scheduled work on Monroe Canyon Road the week of Aug. 6. The board also approved purchase of a belly dump trailer for $18,000 (Sept. 4) and later purchased a 2005 International truck for $19,900 (Dec. 3) to support operations. The board approved the county’s One and Six Year Road Plan after a public hearing in March.
Throughout the year commissioners and staff discussed FEMA funds received ($109,000) for road options on Cottonwood and Moody Roads and repeatedly posted 'No thru traffic' signs on Moody Road while evaluating its legal status. Where formal motions occurred, roll call votes were recorded as unanimous unless otherwise noted.
Next steps noted by the board included staff recommendations on which gravel/crushing bids to accept, follow-up contracts to be prepared by the county attorney, and additional study/recommendations on road closures and resurfacing schedules.
