Council reviews COG-funded Center Street widening plans, flags drainage and UDOT coordination needs

Eric Dursteler presented updates to the Center Street widening design tied to a COG award, noting the addition of sidewalk and gutter and an ADA ramp at the corner near the veterans’ memorial. The project team added design elements to better meet accessibility standards but council members raised several drainage and utility coordination issues.

Jed Woodward said the existing culvert under the highway currently ‘‘leads to nowhere’’ on the north side and emphasized the need for improved drainage on that side of the highway. Council discussed the option of installing a drain box at the post office corner and tying new gutter flow into an existing east‑side drain line that appears to be 8 feet deep but has only one known manhole. Dursteler said plans could tie curb and gutter into the existing drain line but further survey work is needed to confirm locations.

The council discussed moving curb and gutter alignment to match the west side of the block and separating curb and gutter to allow the sidewalk to shift west. Members also noted several utility poles on the west side of Center Street that may be legacy poles; Jed Woodward will follow up with Comcast to determine whether those poles remain in use or can be relocated. Eric Dursteler said he will update the plans as discussed and present them to the County for approval.

No formal vote occurred on the design at this meeting; councilors requested additional survey and coordination with UDOT, the County and utility providers before submitting finalized plans.
