Interim City Manager Sean Hovis recommended adding Veterans Day to the list of paid holidays the City of Newton observes, noting that many federal and state offices observe the day and that Newton has numerous veterans on staff. He said adding the day would help workers who otherwise must use vacation time for childcare when schools are closed.
Council Member Jody Dixon moved the request and Council Member Ed Sain seconded. Council approved the addition of Veterans Day to the city’s paid holidays by unanimous vote.
The change adds Veterans Day to Newton’s existing holiday schedule; the council did not specify an effective date beyond the approval recorded in the meeting minutes.
