Newton City Council met April 20 at Newton City Hall and unanimously approved the minutes of its April 6 meeting and the assembled consent agenda, Mayor Eddie Haupt said at the start of the meeting.
The consent agenda included tax releases, sewer adjustments, reappointments to the planning commission, appointments to boards and commissions, an easement and encroachment agreement, and a budget ordinance amendment to recognize insurance claim proceeds. Council Member Jody Dixon moved to approve the consent agenda; Council Member Jerry Hodge seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
The council also placed two proclamations on file: one recognizing Reverend Robert Silber and another honoring Jennie Connor on her retirement as executive director of the Catawba County United Way. Council Member Ed Sain read the retirement proclamation for Connor, which Mark Bumgarner accepted on her behalf; Bumgarner read a letter from Connor and thanked the council for its support.
Mayor Haupt opened the public comment period for non-agenda items; no one signed up to speak.
The council's procedural actions concluded with the approved motions recorded in the official minutes.
