Newton authorizes replacement vehicles, contingent on financing

The Newton City Council on June 15 authorized staff to purchase new public-works vehicles using state procurement contracts, contingent on financing expected to close the following week.
City Manager Todd Clark said replacing a non-operational 1977 Chevrolet C-60 flusher truck with a new dump truck preserves a custom pothole-filling device and adds an extra dump truck for operations and snow events. The state procurement quotes totaled $174,351.70 for the chassis and dump bed, and $176,357.40 with tag and title. Council previously approved financing; closing with BB&T/Truist Bank was delayed, so council authorized the purchase contingent on financing being in place.
Clark also described replacement of a 2007 Sterling tandem dump truck and a 2002 Kubota tractor. State contract pricing put the new dump truck at $147,420.70 (estimated $149,426.70 with tag/title) and the tractor at $62,968.73. Council authorized the purchases by motion; approvals were recorded unanimously and are contingent on the bank closing the financing.
