Newton recognizes Kiwanis centennial and utility awards; downtown development opportunities presented

Newton City Council used part of its Sept. 21 meeting to recognize long-standing community service and operational achievements, and to hear a downtown development opportunity presentation.
Mayor Pro Tem John Stiver and Council Member Ed Sain presented a proclamation recognizing the Newton Kiwanis Club’s 100 years of service. City Manager Todd Clark and Public Works Director Dusty Wentz highlighted two staff awards: the Electric Division received a North Carolina Association Municipal Electric Systems safety award for no lost-time injuries during 2020, with Clark crediting Electric Division Manager Doug Wesson and supervisor Jeff Cochrane for leadership in safety; and the City’s Water Treatment Plant received the Area Wide Optimization Program (AWOP) award and a "Gold Star" honor for sustained high treatment standards.
Planning Director Randy Williams introduced Lisa Roberts of ESP Associates, who presented a map identifying underutilized downtown parcels and potential redevelopment opportunities. Council thanked Ms. Roberts for the presentation and directed staff to continue work on downtown opportunities as part of planning and economic development efforts.
No formal council action was required on the recognitions or the presentation during the meeting.
