Newton staff report: BRIC application filed; city told it will receive $227,000 streetscape grant; sewer work and fire engine status updated

City Manager Todd Clark used the Oct. 5 meeting to report a range of ongoing projects and grant activity affecting city infrastructure and services.

Clark said staff applied for a BRIC (Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities) grant to address the City Lake retaining wall. He also reported he had been informed that Newton will be awarded a $227,000 Streetscape grant through the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Other items Clark listed included potential NC Main Street Program funding, Angel Fund investment opportunities, coordination with Catawba County on the wastewater treatment plant project, and an upcoming marketing kickoff meeting on Oct. 21.

On infrastructure, Clark said the West A Street sewer line replacement project has started and a Berkshire Drive speed reduction petition is under consideration. He also reported personnel and equipment updates: Addie Williams, Human Resources Analyst, received a safety and health certificate; Code Enforcement position transition noted (Jon Raines moved to a new position); and the fire department apparatus status: Engine 2 has been repaired and returned to service; Engines 1 and 3 have mechanical issues but remain in service; Engine 4 is completely out of service. Clark also referenced a Metro Net agreement and a Social District ordinance under consideration.
