Millville council weighs whether to help fund nearby Providence library after county cuts

Millville Mayor David Hair told the council that Cache County plans to stop funding the Providence library branch in a few months, and Providence is exploring whether neighboring cities would contribute to continue library services as a regional facility.
Councilmember Ryan Zollinger and Councilmember Darcy Ripplinger said they were hesitant to commit Millville funds, noting the need to keep local fees and property taxes low and that only a small portion of Millville residents might use that particular branch. Councilmember Jacob Ames said he supports the library's value, especially for young children, but requested more information about the size of the funding ask. Councilmember Pamela June observed that Millville residents already pay property taxes — most of which go to schools — and said some of those funds could justify supporting the library for the benefit of children.
No formal vote was taken. Staff will gather additional information about the county's planned withdrawal of funding and any formal request from Providence or the county before the council considers committing municipal funds.
