Fair Board eyes $19,000 lighting upgrade, reports $17,000 in grants for 2026 fair

Jeff Ortgies, president of the Deuel County Fair Board, told the Deuel County Board of Commissioners on March 3 that the fair board plans a lighting project for the arena and trap range estimated at $19,000 to be funded with donations and grants.
Ortgies said the improved lighting would allow the fair board to host spring and fall trap shooting leagues and to better support roping and barrel-racing competitions; he said range officers and safety personnel would be part of trap-range events. Commissioners expressed appreciation for the planned improvements.
Ortgies also announced two grants received for the 2026 fair: $10,000 from the Thomas D. Buckley Trust for entertainment and $7,000 from the Virginia Smith Charitable Trust for entertainment and children’s attractions. The board thanked the trusts and Ortgies for securing the funds.
