Austin mayor says he will submit committee assignments after brief work-session changes

Mayor Curt Watson used the council's first work session of 2026 to outline committee and intergovernmental appointments and said he would submit a final list to the city clerk after consolidating feedback.

The mayor told colleagues the code requires committee membership to be set at the first council work session of the calendar year and said most members would remain on their current committees with a few exceptions. “If we get it all solved here in the next 10 minutes to 10 hours, we'll, I'll make that presentation and I'll let everybody know by posting on the message board when that presentation is done,” Watson said.

Why it matters: committee assignments determine which councilmembers steer oversight on topics such as housing, public safety and transportation. Small changes ahead of the new year shape who will lead hearings and drive policy review for 2026.

What the mayor proposed

Mayor Curt Watson said he would step off the Public Safety Committee and proposed that Councilmember Mike Siegel become a member of that panel and also be named vice chair of the Housing and Planning Committee. Watson said he would make the appointments official by filing the list with the clerk: “When I've done that ... I'll also have the list for everybody,” he said.

Councilmember Crystal Lane said she wants the city to reinvigorate the Regional Affordability Committee as an active forum to address housing affordability alongside transportation, childcare, wages and workforce issues. “As it relates to the Regional Affordability Committee, I've been in pretty close and continuous conversation with council member Fuentes,” Lane said, describing a cross-cutting agenda that would not be run as a committee of the whole.

Mayor Pro Tem Vanessa Fuentes echoed Lane's intent to pursue a regional approach and Watson said he would list Lane, Fuentes and himself as initial contacts for the revived committee.

Other personnel and committee notes

Councilmember Ryan Alter said he would take Councilmember Lane's seat on the Clean Air Force of Central Texas board and noted he has already assumed the mayor's designee role on the firefighter pension board. “I've spoken with councilman Lane about the Clean Air Force of Central Texas board and would like to take her place on that board,” Alter said.

Councilmember Zoe Cadrey asked to be removed from the Public Health Committee to reduce her committee load; Watson said he would remove her when he files the final list with the clerk. Councilmember Natasha Harper Madison said she would like to remain on the Housing and Planning Committee and is still deciding whether to step off the Mobility Committee for succession planning.

Process and next steps

Watson said the code allows changes at later work sessions, but he intends to file the committee list “today” and post it on the council message board. He noted that, in practice, some membership questions can be resolved later if members request changes. Members agreed to defer consideration of a Planning Commission appointment (item D2) because the resumes and routine processing had not been circulated in advance.

No formal votes

There were no formal motions or recorded roll-call votes on committee assignments during the work session; councilmembers discussed preferences and the mayor committed to file the final appointments with the clerk.
