State representative announces $1M for Springwoods Park; council hears wide public comment on transit and safety

State Representative John Busey described the grant as support for upgrading Springwoods Park to a play‑for‑all‑abilities site that would prioritize accessibility and safety. Councilmember Krista Lane moved approval of the resolution and the item passed without objection.
At noon public communication, community speakers raised a variety of concerns and proposals:
• Camille Cook (Public Citizen, Resource Management Commission) outlined recommendations for the upcoming Texas Gas Service franchise renewal, including shortening franchise terms and adopting progressive rate structures and customer assistance programs; she noted residential gas rates rose substantially in recent years and recommended city oversight of conservation programs. "Residential gas rates have gone up 108% between 2019 and 2025," the speaker said, citing the commission's analysis.
• Angela Benavides Garza urged clarity on property‑acquisition rights tied to Project Connect and asked for better information on eminent‑domain rules at the local, state and county levels.
• Public commenters also urged action on North Lamar pedestrian safety and called on the city to turn more than symbolic recognition into on‑the‑ground safety investments after recent pedestrian fatalities.
• A series of speakers supported the Muslim Heritage Month proclamation; several councilmembers added themselves as cosponsors and the council adopted item 55 by unanimous consent.
Council thanked Representative Busey for securing the parks funding and directed staff to coordinate implementation. The meeting concluded after zoning items were read and the consent agenda was adopted.
