Members of the Boys & Girls Club’s Meadowbrook program testified to the Public Safety Committee on Dec. 1 about youth‑led community violence intervention work and service projects intended to improve neighborhood safety.
Sydney Trevino, representing the Boys & Girls Club, introduced Meadowbrook participants and said the group developed a social‑justice project focused on gun violence prevention, mental‑health supports and community engagement. Club members described a community cleanup and a Thrive Fest resource fair designed to connect residents to health and wellness services; Trevino said some participants later traveled to Washington, D.C. to advocate for their work.
Atal Manduze (self‑identified as the club president) described the cleanup and the Thrive Fest; Kelsey Taylor and other youth took turns describing prevention activities and outreach. Committee members praised the young people for civic engagement and encouraged them to return with updates. Chair Velasquez thanked the presenters for representing Austin at national advocacy events and invited them to testify again.
