Smithfield Council adopts updated recreation fees, approves meeting schedule and public-records changes

The Smithfield City Council on Feb. 11 adopted a revised Prevailing Fee Schedule that raises several recreation program fees and adds new line items, and also approved two housekeeping ordinances establishing the 2026 meeting calendar and updating the city’s public-records procedures.
Recreation Director Brett Daniels presented the fee changes, which set new or adjusted rates for youth and adult leagues, camps, booth rentals and event registrations effective Feb. 12, 2026. Examples included a new youth hockey fee ($40–$45 depending on grade), a reversible jersey price increase ($13 to $15), higher prep and competitive basketball team fees and modest increases for running events and vendor booth rentals. Daniels confirmed the relay-team registration fee applies per team, not per participant.
"The programs continue to increase each year," Daniels told the council, and the proposed schedule is intended to keep Smithfield competitive while preserving low-cost options for broad participation.
Councilmember Todd Orme moved to adopt Resolution 2026-01 amending the Prevailing Fee Schedule as presented; Councilmember Chris Olsen seconded and the motion passed 5-0 (Engler, Downs, Olsen, Orme, Staker). The new fees take effect Feb. 12, 2026, until a future council update.
