Parent tells Kilgore ISD board her child's grades were handled inconsistently, asks for correction

Bracy Boyd Sammons, identifying herself as a mother, addressed the Kilgore ISD Board of Trustees during public comment to allege that a teacher had not provided makeup assignments for her daughter after LEAP attendance and that, as a result, her child's grade did not reflect her mastery of work. "I'm only here as a mother representing and defending my child against possible grading inequities at KIS," Sammons said, citing TASB policy EIA and saying the district's grading guidelines require sufficient graded assignments and clear communication to students and parents.
Sammons said she had multiple conversations with the teacher who told her the missing assignments would be sent home, but the paperwork never arrived despite her daughter asking daily. She said another parent reported a similar incident that was corrected for that child, adding that her daughter had not received the same correction. "This put my child at an unfair advantage," Sammons said, asking the board to "make this right for my child."
Trustees asked clarifying questions after the comment. One trustee asked whether the grading issue stemmed from district policy or a state mandate; Sammons said the concern related to local policy. Board members also sought specifics about the missed work and confirmed the student had been absent for LEAP; Sammons said the assignments were not made available when her daughter returned. A trustee noted the board could request factual information from the speaker under board policy but could not enter into deliberation during public comment.
The board did not report a formal remedial action on the record at that time. Trustees thanked Sammons for bringing the concern to the board and indicated staff would follow up; no vote or directive was recorded in the meeting minutes presented at the meeting.
The matter, as described by Sammons, involves (a) alleged inconsistent application of grading; (b) a teacher promise to provide makeup work that was not fulfilled; and (c) a claim that another family received a correction while her child did not. Sammons asked the board to correct her daughter's grade in line with Kilgore ISD policy EIA and the district's grading guidelines.
