The Vidor Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a $168,444.91 purchase to replace the districtwide phone system at the Dec. 8 meeting.
Staff presented the proposal, saying the existing system is about 10 years old and that certain components may soon be unsupported. The recommended Cisco-based replacement includes location services required for compliance with Alyssa's Law; staff said the district will retain the existing handsets to save an estimated $50,000 and minimize user disruption. A VMware software component will have a recurring charge as part of the vendor's design.
Trustees asked about anticipated downtime during installation, life expectancy and whether AI features are present. Staff said downtime should be minimal if the vendor and campus technicians coordinate the cutover and that the district hopes to realize 8–10 years of useful life from the new system. On AI, staff said such functionality is increasingly embedded in vendor products but did not provide product‑level specifics.
A motion to approve the purchase was made, seconded and carried by voice vote (7–0).
