Fogel said the superintendent had told her the district's priority was ensuring educational materials remained available to students rather than "protecting children from ******** explicit materials," language that appears in the transcript with a redaction. She also questioned how, if no one had challenged books over the past year, the list she provided led to the removal of six titles from shelves.
Fogel criticized how district officials and the news media handled a prior board meeting, saying the district had reached out to the news outlet to correct the coverage but had not contacted her directly about what she said was a misrepresentation. "How hard would it have been to say, 'Tammy, would you please correct that misinformation?'" she asked.
The chair opened the public-comment portion of the meeting by reviewing Abilene ISD policy BED(LOCAL) governing oral communications and noting the Texas Open Meetings Act limits board discussion of items not on the posted agenda. The chair also explained the five-minute time limit for speakers and said the board had one public commenter that night.
After Fogel finished, the chair thanked her, recognized another participant by name, and then announced the board would move into closed session.
