Abilene ISD trustees honor two students who rescued family from house fire

At a special meeting on Nov. 20, 2025, the Abilene Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve a resolution honoring two Abilene High School students, Abby Bryan and Landon Vaughn, for rescuing a family from a house fire on Nov. 10.
A trustee read the board resolution into the record, saying the students "demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness" when they alerted residents, ensured safety and helped evacuate children. The board recorded the resolution in the district's official minutes and planned to present certificates from Abilene ISD to each student.
Chief Forrest of the Abilene Fire Department presented lifesaver awards at the meeting and read the award citation, saying the students' actions "directly resulted in lives being saved." Board members and attendees applauded and took photographs with the students and their family members.
The motion to approve the resolution was moved and seconded and passed on a roll-call vote recorded as 6–0 with Sandy Earls absent. The board noted the resolution and award would remain in the district's permanent record.
The meeting then proceeded to other agenda items.
