Abilene ISD presents early-year MAP results and pilots MClass math for K–2

District curriculum staff on Wednesday presented early-year assessment results and described new assessment pilots intended to guide classroom instruction.
Carrie Thornburg, executive director for elementary curriculum and instruction, told the board that about 9,121 students took the reading MAP assessment and 9,210 took the math MAP (kindergarten through eighth grade), and that district-level beginning-of-year results show more than 50% of students in color bands at or above grade level compared with national norms. Thornburg and her team emphasized these are diagnostic, beginning-of-year data used to target instruction and measure mid-year and end-of-year progress.
Mandy Joyner described MClass reading (used for kindergartners through second grade and additional RTI licenses for older students), explaining the one-minute timed foundational-skills checks and how the data feed interventions and parent reports. Kelly Grigsby introduced a new MClass math pilot (Amplify) for grades K–2, noting the platform gives teachers cross-district progress-monitoring data and lesson suggestions for small-group remediation.
Board members asked about test overlap and teacher workload; staff said MAP and MClass serve complementary diagnostic purposes — MAP is adaptive and nationally normed while MClass provides frequent standardized fluency checks and classroom-level reports. Staff also described mentor pairing for new teachers and district-level supports.
