The Canyon ISD Board of Directors on Dec. 8 approved a budget amendment to fund three school resource officers (SROs) hired after the 2025–26 budget was adopted.
Lea Beth, presenting the monthly financials, told trustees the district did not include the positions in the adopted budget but had hired additional SROs this year to provide campus coverage. "We were requesting a budget amendment to move $370,000 out of fund balance into the security function so that we can pay those SROs," Lea Beth said, adding that the sale of a parcel south of Canyon Junior High will offset the extra appropriation.
Board members discussed the district's ongoing security costs and noted the state safety allotment has not fully covered local SRO expenses. One trustee thanked Canyon Police Department, Amarillo PD and the Randall County Sheriff's Department for assistance filling SRO needs when agencies faced hiring shortages.
A motion to approve the amendment was moved and seconded; the chair called for a voice/hand vote and the motion carried unanimously.
The amendment increases operating appropriations by $370,000 and records corresponding revenue from the land sale; staff said the journal entries to move the amounts into the new security and operating functions will be completed.
