District leaders told the Sultan School District board on March 15 that an HR hire did not work out and the district is restarting recruitment for an HR manager. The superintendent described interim coverage by existing staff and urged the board to review salary ranges to remain competitive.
"We hired what would have been a HR manager... and it didn't work out," the superintendent said, adding the interim plan will involve existing staff taking on some extra hours while a search restarts. He recommended the board consider salary adjustments to attract candidates.
The board received an enrollment update showing several schools above budgeted counts: Sultan Elementary reported a notably large kindergarten cohort and was cited as roughly 26 students above budget at that school; Gold Bar Elementary was about 25 students above budget; Sultan Middle School was reported roughly 19 over budget; and Sultan High School enrollments were described as increasing (one figure reported as 599). The superintendent noted October 1 counts influence state funding and urged staff to monitor ratios and staffing needs.
On safety, the superintendent said the district has developed a reunification plan and site-level materials and subscribes to ALICE protocols; the district has not yet practiced full reunification drills and plans to involve administrators and the SRO in future exercises.
Next steps: staff will restart HR recruitment, bring salary-range material to a workshop, and develop practice schedules for safety and reunification procedures.
