Survey shows majority support for fall break; trustees consider adding break to 2026‑27 calendar

Katy ISD staff presented three draft instructional calendars and survey results Monday that showed majority support for a calendar option that includes a short October fall break.
District staff said the survey, administered Dec. 16–Jan. 6 and sent to roughly 132,000 parents and staff, drew 17,975 responses (about 13 percent). Option C — which starts earlier under the district’s local innovation plan, preserves required instructional minutes and adds a short fall break in October — received the most support overall, with 56 percent of respondents favoring it. Katy ISD staff reported the option was the top choice across stakeholder groups; Katy ISD staff participation for Option C was smaller in share but still the highest single option among staff responses.
Trustees asked how the fall break would affect UIL seasons and extracurricular schedules. Athletics and fine‑arts staff said in‑season activities plan around breaks and the district coordinates scheduling with coaches and directors.
Trustee discussion turned to whether the board should implement the fall break sooner. Several trustees said adopting a modified calendar for 2026‑27 would give families, day‑care providers and staff time to plan. Administration agreed to prepare a calendar amendment and an agenda item for the board’s next meeting so trustees could vote to modify the 2026‑27 calendar if they choose.
No final board action was taken Monday; the board will consider an action item in its upcoming meeting.
