Newton approves purchase of distribution reclosers for automation project

Newton City Council voted Jan. 5 to purchase distribution recloser equipment as part of a distribution automation capital project.
Electric Division Supervisor Doug Wesson said staff solicited bids; Shealy/Border States bid $22,000 per unit and WESCO bid $22,039. Staff recommended awarding to Shealy/Border States as the lowest responsive bidder. Council approved a resolution of intent to reimburse, awarded the bid for seven units (total $154,000) and adopted a capital project and budget ordinance amendment. Wesson said delivery is expected in about 19 weeks from order.
Wesson described additional project elements: fiber installation ($110,000), engineering and programming ($30,000), bypass switches and media converters ($43,000), and installation labor ($100,000), bringing total project cost to $437,000. Council recorded the resolution and appropriation in the meeting documents.
The city will complete installation largely with in‑house labor, and staff said the project was included in the FY2021 budget as borrowed funds.
