Caribou County creates Historical Preservation Commission to pursue grants

Caribou County commissioners voted Feb. 23 to create a Caribou Historical Preservation Commission and appoint six initial members to begin pursuing state approval and grant funding.
Galen Wilson of the Caribou Historical Society asked the board to form a commission so the group could apply for preservation grants. Commissioner Bryce Somsen moved to create the commission and to appoint Commissioners Somsen, Mark Mathews and Marty McCullough along with Galen Wilson, Bill Horsley and Coleen Benson; the motion passed.
The move creates a body of at least five members that will work on preservation projects and coordinate with the state. Wilson asked the board for written confirmation and a copy of Ordinance 2026-02 so he could forward the paperwork to state authorities and begin grant work.
The commissioners agreed minutes for the new commission will be included with Caribou County Commissioners minutes. The board did not announce any immediate funding for projects; Wilson said the commission’s next step is to secure the ordinance text and proceed with the state application.
The board approved the commission as part of a broader morning agenda that also included equipment purchases and policy changes; no additional votes on the preservation commission were recorded at the meeting’s close.
