Smyth County Board adopts two resolutions on life dignity and redistricting

The Board unanimously approved a resolution affirming the inherent dignity and rights of all human life and a separate resolution opposing congressional redistricting plans that it says would dilute rural or conservative representation.
At its Feb. 26 meeting, the Smyth County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved two symbolic resolutions that the Board said reflect county principles and concerns.
Chilhowie District Supervisor Mike Sturgill presented a Resolution Affirming the Inherent Dignity and Rights of All Human Life; after reading the text into the record the Board voted to adopt the resolution. The resolution affirms the Boards support for policies and community initiatives the Board says "promote prevention, treatment, recovery and enforcement" and calls for respectful dialogue and support for families.
Rye Valley District Supervisor Jason Parris presented a separate Resolution Opposing Congressional Redistricting That Dilutes Rural/Conservative Representation. That resolution states the Boards opposition to redistricting plans that, in the Boards view, would divide rural communities or weaken their ability to elect representatives reflecting regional interests; the resolution directs staff to transmit copies to the Governor, Smyth Countys members of the General Assembly and the Virginia Supreme Court.
Both resolutions passed on unanimous votes with all seven supervisors recorded as voting aye. The resolutions are statements of principle and do not create new county law or appropriations.
