Smyth County approves bigger fireworks contract for 250th commemoration; town to increase contribution

Smyth County approved a 2026 fireworks contract at the Feb. 12 meeting that will expand the County's contribution to the community fireworks show marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
County Administrator Shawn Utt told the Board that the county spent $25,000 on the fireworks display in 2025 and the Town of Marion contributed $5,000. To fund a larger celebration in 2026—and to account for higher costs driven by tariffs—Utt recommended increasing the county payment to $30,000 and increasing the town's contribution to $10,000. Rye Valley District Supervisor Jason Parris asked staff to identify alternative viewing locations and requested a more detailed summary of the show; Chair Charles Atkins encouraged staff to pursue private sponsorships to offset costs. Royal Oak District Supervisor Courtney Widener moved to approve the contract and authorize the County Administrator to execute it; Jason Parris seconded and the Board approved the motion unanimously.
The approved contract authorizes county payment and execution; the Board did not finalize alternate venues or a sponsorship plan at the meeting and asked staff to provide additional details before the event.
