The Conneaut Health Department and NOPEC provided updates to Council at the Feb. 23 meeting.
Health: Nichele Blood, Conneaut Health Commissioner, presented the department’s 2025 Animal Bite and Mortality report and noted that Ohio’s new death-certificate reporting system includes more contributing factors. She said the Health Department receives influenza and COVID notifications only in the event of hospitalizations, confirmed mosquito-control work will continue this year and announced a RAM Clinic at Lakeside Junior High on April 11–12. When asked whether flu shots remain advisable, Blood said yes, noting flu season continues through May.
Energy/utility: Genny Costanzo, NOPEC representative for Ashtabula County, reported roughly 2,510 electric accounts and 1,959 gas accounts in Conneaut enrolled through NOPEC. She said the City has $12,229 available in NOPEC grant funds for this year and will receive an additional $22,777. Costanzo explained that customers choose suppliers only for the supply portion of their bill and that transmission and distribution charges are unaffected; she also said there is no termination fee for leaving NOPEC and noted a $67 credit (spread over three months) for Illuminating Company customers tied to a lawsuit settlement.
