Engineers propose I-beam reinforcement after transfer-station damage; county plans short shutdown for repairs

Bill Shipley told commissioners that plans for the county transfer station are about 95% complete, but that recent seismic activity caused damage to the tipping floor area: concrete blocks were knocked out and a support beam near the trailer entrance was destabilized. Engineers and a Loch Lane representative evaluated the site and recommended installing I-beams on each side of the doorway, an I-beam across the top, and an additional beam to reinforce the tipping-floor support.
Shipley said the repair should be a short, targeted effort and estimated the on-site work would take about three days. During repairs the county plans to stage roll-off dumpsters for residential waste next to the scale house and route commercial vehicles to a temporary tipping floor; staff said they expect drawings and a cost estimate before the end of the week and that they will submit the claim to insurance for possible reimbursement.
Commissioners asked whether insurance would cover the damage; staff said they would file a claim but did not provide a firm out-of-pocket cost. The board did not take a formal vote at this meeting on the repair plan; staff will return with drawings and cost estimates for any required formal approvals.
