The Town of Cramerton Board of Commissioners unanimously approved an ordinance adding Chapter 95, Section .04 to the town code to prohibit use of unmuffled compression brakes, except in emergencies.
Commissioner Dixie Abernathy moved to approve the ordinance and Commissioner Kathy Ramsey seconded. The Board completed the second reading required by state law and voted unanimously to adopt the measure.
Board members said the ordinance responds to citizen complaints. The town attorney and staff researched ordinances used by other municipalities and recommended the language adopted by the Board. Town staff will request signage from the North Carolina Department of Transportation and has shared the change with Two Rivers and other relevant entities to aid enforcement and public notice.
The ordinance was adopted at the April 1, 2025 workshop. The Board did not state a separate effective date during the meeting; staff action to request DOT signage was identified as the immediate next step.
