Cramerton commissioners approve Helix R sculpture installation, donors to fund project

The Town of Cramerton Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Oct. 1 to proceed with the Helix R sculpture installation and a small pocket park after hearing a construction quote of $111,920.
Mayor Pro Tempore Richard Atkinson told the board he worked with Carolina Thread Trail and local partners for several years to secure a permanent home for the sculpture and that donor contributions amount to roughly $120,000, which exceeds the quoted installation cost. Town Manager Zach Ollis presented the $111,920 quote and said other contractor estimates were significantly higher.
Town Attorney Karen Wolter briefed the board on next steps if the board gives formal approval: the town will sign a memorandum of understanding with Catawba Lands Conservancy so donors can transfer funds to the conservancy, which will act as a pass-through to the town; the town will then execute a construction contract and bring a resolution to the board for formal consideration.
Mayor Pro Tempore Atkinson moved to move forward with the Helix R Sculpture Project. Commissioner Kathy Ramsey seconded the motion; the board voted unanimously in favor. The board did not record individual roll-call votes in the workshop minutes beyond noting unanimous approval.
The board’s action at the workshop authorized staff to complete the legal agreements and contract work necessary to install the sculpture; final construction timing and a formal resolution will be taken up in subsequent board paperwork and meetings.
