Newton City Council on July 7 approved a lease for the former fire department headquarters at 116 West A Street and adjoining parking to District 9 Brewing Company.
Assistant City Manager Sean Hovis summarized negotiations and said the proposed lease incorporates council‑directed terms including rental schedule for the first five years, tenant responsibility for utilities, insurance and interior maintenance, and provisions for two‑year extension options that together cap the total lease at nine years to comply with North Carolina General Statute 160A‑272.
Council also voted to set the lease date as July 8, 2020 and approved a one‑time cost of $18,500 to remove asbestos identified in the structure. The mayor was authorized to execute the lease on the city’s behalf. The motions approving the lease and authorizing the asbestos abatement were made by Council Member Jody Dixon and supported unanimously.
