Demographer: Bellevue has grown more diverse and downtown has become a population center

The city’s chief demographer presented a data-driven overview of Bellevue’s population change, showing three broad trends: the city has become more diverse racially and ethnically over the last several decades; much recent growth is among foreign-born residents; and downtown has emerged as one of the city’s largest residential neighborhoods.

"Bellevue went from being this kind of sleepy little suburban city to now being, firmly majority‑minority," the demographer said, summarizing dot‑density and neighborhood data that show the city is no longer majority non‑Hispanic white. The presenter noted that more than half of households report speaking a language other than English at home in recent survey windows.

The presenter also reviewed jobs and commuting patterns, noting downtown accounts for roughly 40% of the city’s jobs and that employment numbers shifted in some corridors in recent years. The demographer described median household income in Bellevue as very high compared with the region and flagged a notable gender pay gap in some neighborhoods and industries.

Commissioners asked questions about data sources and annexation parcels; staff said some nearby parcels (about 27 parcels totaling about 50 acres) have submitted notices of intent to petition for annexation and that staff will continue to update permit and application trackers. The demographer said dashboards and 61 data visualizations are available online for residents who want to explore the data further.

The presentation was informational; the commission did not take formal action on the demographic information but discussed how data should inform neighborhood planning and outreach.
