Affordable housing board to focus 2026 work on senior living; ADU workshop set Feb. 5

Michael Alpert, the city’s assistant director for planning, zoning and economic development, read the Affordable Housing Advisory Board’s 2025 statement and said the committee intends to continue momentum into 2026. "Our 2025 AHEC report demonstrates a year's worth of considerable effort to promote affordable housing within the city," Alpert said.

The board chair, Dudko, told the council the board will focus its 2026 work on senior affordable living after a well-attended town hall last year. "This year, we're gonna focus our attention... on the issue of senior affordable living in the city of Plantation," Dudko said, adding the board aims to develop recommendations for council consideration.

Alpert also announced a city workshop on accessory dwelling units on Feb. 5 at 6:00 p.m. that will include the building official and city engineer to answer construction and permitting questions. "We have our ADU workshop on February 5 ... It’ll start at 06:00 and its purpose ... is to inform residents about the ability to do it," Alpert said.

Why it matters: The board framed 2026 as a year to move beyond baseline, statutorily required considerations and produce targeted proposals—particularly for seniors—while the ADU workshop is intended to give residents practical, technical guidance that could expand local housing options.

What’s next: The board said it will return recommendations to council as they develop and will continue outreach tied to the senior-living focus. The city will hold the ADU workshop Feb. 5; the city’s building official and engineer will be present to answer resident questions.
