Plantation approves inclusive playground at Liberty Tree Park, pauses two curbside parking additions after resident concerns

The Plantation City Council on Jan. 14 approved a site-plan amendment to add an all-inclusive, ADA-accessible playground and related accessibility and drainage improvements at Liberty Tree Park, but it held back two proposed curbside parking additions after neighbors raised concerns.
Planning and parks staff told the council the playground had been grant-funded, the equipment was in production and installation was targeted for mid-March. Staff said additional parking and drainage corrections were necessary because people already park on roadside swales, which damages grass and impedes stormwater flow. City Engineer Samira Shalane said the proposed parallel spaces would be semi-pervious to preserve swale drainage while providing formalized parking.
Several nearby residents submitted emails and asked for more community outreach because they had not realized the scope or location of proposed curbside parking. One resident said formalizing roadside spaces changes the neighborhood's character by moving from "people can park there" to "people should park there." Parks staff and the planning director reiterated that the playground itself was previously approved through grant and advisory-board processes and that parking recommendations were intended to support access for families and bus drop-offs.
"The playground was approved," Parks staff said; "we're now trying to make it safer and more accessible for individuals to park and then enjoy." Council members expressed support for the inclusive playground while acknowledging resident concerns about parking on NW 73rd Avenue and NW 6th Street.
Motion and phasing: Councilmember Andrea moved, with a friendly amendment accepted by the maker, to approve the site plan amendment for the inclusive playground and associated improvements but to pause the proposed parking additions on NW 6th and NW 73rd and do targeted neighborhood outreach. The motion passed unanimously.
Next steps: Staff will proceed with playground installation and drainage improvements that do not depend on the paused curbside parking additions. The administration will hold additional outreach with adjacent residents before returning to council if it still recommends the 6th/73rd parking changes.
