The museum's curator described how local collections capacity affects federal permitting and research: "Part of the permitting process is showing that we have the space to appropriately take care of that fossil before we can get issued that permit to dig that up," the curator said, arguing that a secure curatorial center would make Carter County more competitive for future collections and grant funding and support field training and off‑season research visits.
County staff reported a PILT fund balance of $1,499,001.56 and noted other obligations, including a $200,000 reservation the commissioners wished to protect for the county pool. Commissioners and the museum representatives discussed timing for a public fundraising campaign and design work; museum leaders said a $1,000,000 county commitment would cover the collections portion of the project and would help the campaign reach an earlier public fundraising threshold.
No formal action was taken on the request during public comment; commissioners said the matter would be considered as part of the budget and PITL/PILT allocations announced in the spring.
