Superintendent highlights student spotlights and a $10,000 donation

Superintendent Dr. Dennis Willingham opened the new-business portion of the Walker County Board of Education’s Jan. 8 meeting by saying the district had a strong start to the 2026 school year and by recognizing the board for School Board Recognition Month.
Dr. Willingham recognized the November Superintendent’s Student Spotlight, Maddie Gilreath of Carbon Hill High School (unable to attend), and the December spotlight, Bella Reese of Dora High School. He also thanked Pinnacle Bank for a $10,000 donation the transcript reports was given at Christmas to support the district.
Dr. Willingham recommended approval of personnel lists covering regular, professional and support personnel; the board approved the recommendations unanimously. He also presented four field trips for approval and recommended the customary $500 reimbursement stipend for Valley Jr High Beta Club and Lupton Jr High Beta Club, explaining the stipend was allowable because the district said all students benefit from the learning opportunities. The board approved those field trips and the stipend by unanimous vote.
Dr. Willingham asked to be authorized to sign documents on the board’s behalf for a facility use agreement related to Oakman High and to sign documents related to the property tax renewal resolution; both authorities were granted as part of motions approved by the board.
The superintendent’s remarks concluded without dissent. The board adjourned at 4:46 p.m.
