The Carter County Commission voted to authorize purchase of a Craig snow wing for a county motor grader after road and bridge staff reviewed options for retrofitting aging graders.
Road and bridge staff (speaker 9) described the difficulty of sourcing wings for older Cat graders and presented pricing: a Hanky unit priced at about $25,008.51 and a Craig unit at about $24,001.64. Commissioner (speaker 5) moved to allow purchasing the Craig unit; the Chair seconded and the motion carried with no public comment.
Why it matters: staff said many of the county's grader components are 20–25 years old and that wings for those models are no longer manufactured; retrofitting will require fabrication and installation work. Staff recommended purchasing only one wing this year and adding wings as graders are replaced in the next budget cycle.
In related infrastructure business, road staff reported Brownfield pit reclamation work ran over the anticipated budget this year because of additional reclamation required by DEQ. Staff discussed renting a large excavator with a hydraulic hammer (rental rates and availability vary by vendor) as a winter opportunity to mine additional gravel and stockpile material while weather permits.
