Colbert County Schools board approves routine business, after-school staffing and contracts

The Colbert County Schools Board of Education met Aug. 21 in Tuscumbia and approved a slate of routine agenda items, staffing recommendations and contracts ahead of the 2025–2026 school year. Superintendent Nathan Fuller presented the recommendations and the board acted on motions covering personnel, procurement and program staffing.
The board unanimously approved the meeting agenda and the consent agenda, which included minutes from three recent meetings and the reconciled monthly financial report for May 2025. The report showed payroll of $2,580,442.73 and bills and accounts totaling $1,205,724.22; bank statements were reconciled to the general ledger.
Personnel approvals included the resignation of Walter Logan Pouncey as band director at Colbert County High School, the hiring of Tommy Thompson as band director (effective Aug. 25, 2025) and several county-wide paraprofessionals and long-term substitute assignments. Multiple FMLA and paid parental leave requests were approved with the effective date ranges recorded in the minutes.
The board approved staffing, pay and operational details for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) after-school program at four elementary schools for 2025–2026. Approved hourly rates are Site Lead $35, Certified Teacher $30, Non-Certified Teacher $25 and Teacher Aide $18; the program’s staff-to-student ratio is set at 1:12, with hours Monday–Friday, 3:00–5:30 p.m., and funding provided by the 21st CCLC grant.
Procurement actions approved included fuel contracts (Vaughn Gas for propane at $1.599/gal; Carter Oil Co. for unleaded at $2.85/gal and diesel at $2.90/gal through July 31, 2026), a purchase order for fence repairs at Colbert Heights High School for $36,017.96 to be reimbursed by insurance, a one-year Edmentum renewal for $96,816.50 and a one-year renewal with Educational Materials Specialists for $33,906.00. The board also approved $2,328.82 in matching funds for Colbert Heights High School toward a $4,657.65 equipment purchase and declared a small number of items surplus.
The board approved an extension of the Northwest Alabama CNP Cooperative Supplemental Grocery Contract with Osborn Foodservice (second extension since 2022–23) and a Memorandum of Agreement with the Tennessee Valley Juvenile Detention Center for 2025–2026.
Board members set athletic ticket prices for 2025–2026: varsity football general admission $10 ($8 advance), varsity volleyball/basketball/softball/baseball $8, sub‑varsity $7, student $5, tournament $10. All Colbert County Schools employees will receive free admission to home-hosted events with an ID badge; retirees with 25 years of service receive free admission with verification. Parking for varsity football was described as an optional donation; season-pass and seating decisions are left to local schools.
The meeting included several votes taken unanimously. The board adjourned at 6:28 p.m.
