Representatives of National Grid briefed the Ordinance & Intergovernmental Relations Committee on Feb. 24 about two proposed electrical installations to power new traffic signal cabinets at MassDOT intersection rebuilds, and the committee voted to forward both items to the full council and order public hearings.
Paulo Sattler, a National Grid representative, explained the work involves installing a new traffic-cabinet power feed, a handhole near the sidewalk, and conduit between an existing manhole and the new handhole to provide electrical service for the new signal equipment. The projects are tied to MassDOT intersection reconstructions at Essex/Amesbury and Essex/Canary streets; Sattler said MassDOT plans to perform its work in early spring and that National Grid’s electrical work would likely follow when ground conditions permit.
Committee members moved to take the previously tabled items off the table, forward both items to the full council, and order public hearings. Roll-call votes carried with all members present voting yes. The committee requested that National Grid provide any additional project documentation to support the public hearings.
Next steps: the items will go before the full council with public hearings scheduled per council process; National Grid and MassDOT will provide timelines and project details to staff.
