The Ordinance & Intergovernmental Relations Committee on Feb. 24 approved forwarding multiple event permits tied to the Semana Hispana festival and related fundraising events to the full Lawrence City Council with favorable recommendations, while asking organizers to correct several date errors in applications.
Jamie Nuri Lopez, an event representative, said the festival has run for decades and described the program as a cultural and family event. Lopez clarified scheduling discrepancies on several applications — for example, some forms listed July when the organizer intended June setup and August festival dates — and confirmed park availability after consulting Recreation Department staff.
The committee voted to send item 51-26 (festival dates as read before the committee) and related items to the full council with favorable recommendations or as committee reports where appropriate. For items with date inconsistencies, members asked staff and organizers to correct applications before final council action.
The committee also approved committee reports and forwardings for associated fundraising and carnival items, and it urged organizers to coordinate with the Recreation Department to confirm park logistics, setup and inspection timing.
