Somerville committee approves internal fire promotions, administration withdraws one appointment

Chair Young Campan said the Somerville City confirmation, appointments and personnel matters committee voted unanimously Wednesday to approve a slate of internal fire promotions and to withdraw one pending appointment, moving a replacement candidate to a later agenda slot.
Young Campan, chair of the committee, told members she had reviewed the materials for the nominees and was "more than satisfied" with the candidates and "didn't think it was a good use of anybody's time to invite them here for a bunch of questions." The administration withdrew agenda item 5 and staff confirmed that item 9 serves as the replacement candidate, the chair said.
The motion to take up the agenda and approve items 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 (with item 5 withdrawn) was made by Chair Young Campan and seconded. The clerk recorded affirmative votes from Councilor Hart, Councilor Strezo, Councilor McLaughlin and Chair Young Campan; the committee reported a quorum of four and the motion carried.
Liaison Hutter confirmed the withdrawal and the substitution of the replacement candidate. No candidates were brought before the committee for live questioning; the chair said she had reviewed the submitted materials and recommended approval.
The committee conducted the meeting under remote participation rules cited as Chapter 2 of the Acts of 2025, and the chair said audio and video recordings and the comprehensive record will be posted on the Somerville City website. The committee adjourned at about 6:33 p.m.
