Officials say Brown School foundation crack is monitored, not currently a structural safety concern

Councilor Davis asked city staff for details after constituents raised concerns about a visible crack at the Brown School. Capital Projects director Ralph Henry described an exterior 'sawtooth' crack where mortar had eroded; staff monitor gauges quarterly and have been comparing photographs and readings gathered over approximately the last two-and-a-half years.
Henry said a purchase order has been issued to have a contractor install backer rod and elastic mortar to close the exposed void, principally to keep out water and pests. Director Gregor Raish and Henry said structural and geotechnical engineers have reviewed the condition and have not identified an immediate structural safety issue. "We've had several different structural engineers and geotech engineers look at this and none of them have raised any cause for alarm," Raish said. The earliest formal report staff referenced dates to 2012, and staff will continue quarterly monitoring and share reports with the school administration.
