Councilor Saeed seeks July update on school building health and carbonization

Councilor Saeed told the joint committee that a 2024 resolution called for both the city council and school committee to receive updates by July 1 on steps to promote student and community health and resilience, including building decarbonization work.
Saeed asked for a written report that inventories measures taken to assess, monitor and improve the healthiness of school buildings and to lay out near- and long-term plans. Legislative liaison Yasmin Ardeci told the committee that language in the collective bargaining agreement sets next steps: the school committee, through Somerville Public Schools legal counsel, should coordinate with the city's legal office to draft an MOU that sets the evaluation standards.
School and city staff discussed potential program opportunities. Laura Patone and other school-committee members raised the MSBA's accelerated repair program (for roofs, windows, doors) and heat-pump grants as potential funding paths for targeted upgrades once swing space and sequencing are resolved. Director Gregor Raish said staff will track roof projects and consider ARP applications where appropriate.
Councilor Saeed said she will refile the order and expects a written report by July 1; the committee noted the work will continue into 2026.
