Council OKs $30,000 transfer to support warming center amid high winter usage

The Somerville City Council approved a $30,000 transfer on Feb. 12 from salary contingency to professional and technical services for the Health & Human Services Department to cover higher than anticipated costs at the city’s FY26 warming center.
Karen Carroll, HHS director, told the council warming center expenses spiked during a prolonged cold snap and cited increased costs for food, transportation to and from the center, added security coverage and some extra staff shifts. Carroll said the funds are expected to cover needs through mid‑April when the center will close for the season.
Councilors praised staff and asked questions about salary lag funds and vacancies; Carroll explained the transfer is from salary lag (unspent salary) and that the department has some vacancies and a navigator hiring in progress.
What happens next: The transfer was approved and will allow HHS to continue operations and services at the warming center through the period of highest winter demand.
