The Somerville Finance Committee voted to recommend a three‑month, time‑only contract extension for Stantec Consulting Services Inc. on the Spring Hill Sewer Separation project so the firm can complete as‑built drawings and closeout deliverables.
Brian Postlewaite, director of engineering, told the committee that the construction project finished last year but the contractor delayed providing information necessary for the consultant to produce final documents. ‘‘They were not able to provide us with the final documents for closeout, predominantly the as built drawings for the project,’’ Postlewaite said, and the city needs a short extension because it cannot spend against a contract after the official end date even if funds remain in the budget.
Councilor Strezzo and Councilor Scott asked whether time‑only extensions are common for long projects; Postlewaite said while the department typically allows time for completion, long projects sometimes require additional months. Councilor Scott noted time‑only extensions are frequent and do not change the city’s financial exposure when no additional funds are added.
The committee laid the item on the table to recommend approval at the meeting’s end; clerks included the item in the combined roll call that approved the laid items.
