The Spokane Valley City Council on Jan. 27 voted to enter an executive session to discuss a potential real estate acquisition, saying the closed meeting would last approximately one hour and that no action would be taken when the council returned to open session.
"I move Council adjourn to Executive Session for approximately 1 hour to discuss potential acquisition of real estate, and that no action will be taken upon return to open session," Deputy Mayor Hatenberg said before the council voted to convene the closed session.
The council’s clerk announced the session began and public recording was stopped. A staff member later read brief extensions of the scheduled return time—first to 7:50 p.m., then to 7:55 p.m.—at the direction of the senior deputy city attorney, Tony Beatty.
The council resumed its public meeting at 7:58 p.m., the clerk said, and reiterated that no formal action would follow from the closed discussion. Shortly after reconvening, a member moved to adjourn; the motion passed on a voice vote and the meeting ended.
The council took no public votes or formal actions related to the subject of the executive session while in open session. Because executive sessions are closed by law to allow confidential bargaining or legal discussion, the council did not disclose the details of the acquisition discussion at the public meeting.
