He said he encourages parents to drop off their children rather than park for the duration of class. Commissioners questioned Barela about the ages of students, competition and promotion activities, and logistical details for testing and ceremonies.
Commissioners also discussed on-street parking near the home. Staff and the commission estimated that six cars could comfortably park in front of the property, with additional space in the driveway. After discussion, Commissioner Heather Weiss moved to approve the business license and grant the requested exception to the vehicle/parking ordinance; Commissioner Gavin Cox seconded the motion. Members Heather Weiss, Ben Bramwell, Alan Christensen, Gavin Cox and Richard Gardner voted “aye.” No members voted “nay.” The motion passed 5-0.
The vote authorizes Barela’s home-based operation under the conditions described at the hearing. The commission did not record additional conditions beyond the parking exception in the transcript. The meeting moved on to other agenda items and adjourned at 7:20 p.m.
