Two new council members sworn; planning board appointment and 2026 schedule approved
Summary
The Stanley Town Council swore in Corey Kelly and Brendan Sweeney, appointed Joshua Pendergraft to the Planning Board/Board of Adjustment, and approved the 2026 meeting schedule with a date change to Jan. 13.
At its Dec. 1 meeting the Stanley Town Council administered the oath of office to Corey Kelly and Brendan Sweeney, the newly elected council members.
The council also considered a single application for the Planning Board/Board of Adjustment and appointed Joshua Pendergraft unanimously after Director Sarah Penley noted his attendance at recent training. Council Member Leigh Anna Helms moved to appoint Pendergraft and Council Member Drew Stewart seconded; the vote was 5–0.
Council approved the 2026 meeting schedule with a change: the January meeting was moved from Jan. 5 to Jan. 13 at the request of Council Member Marsha Miskelly (motion by Miskelly, seconded by Brendan Sweeney), passing unanimously. In council comments, newly sworn Council Member Corey Kelly said improving communication and transparency would be a priority and suggested the council consider an ABC store as a potential revenue source; Council Member Helms said she was strongly opposed for personal reasons.
Routine department reports were received with no substantive questions. Police Chief Derek Summey announced the senior Christmas breakfast on Dec. 19 from 7:00–9:30 a.m. at Stanley Pentecostal Holiness Church. The meeting closed after a pastoral prayer and an adjournment motion that was approved unanimously.
