Committee approves additional $250,000 for generator work at Meriden police station

The Meriden Finance Committee approved an additional $250,000 appropriation to complete work that will enable the police station generator at 50 West Main Street to power the full building.
Facilities Director Rich Doucette said the station’s existing generator was sized to meet the building load but the indoor switch gear cannot accommodate the full transfer and the switch-gear room lacks space. To have the generator power the entire building safely, Doucette said the city must install weather-controlled, outdoor switch gear that will transfer generator power to the building’s circuit breakers.
Doucette described consequences of the current partial coverage: during outages, HVAC systems and some offices lose power, and server rooms can overheat as additional equipment was added to the building over time. He said equipment costs and logistical obstacles have increased since the prior appropriation request, prompting the additional $250,000 ask.
A motion to appropriate the funds was moved and seconded and the committee approved the resolution. After the vote Doucette responded to an earlier public comment about ADA access, saying the ADA issue is under review and contractors are bidding to address it.
