The Stanley Town Council voted unanimously May 13 to rezone 315 W Chestnut Street (parcel 133954) from R‑12 (12,000‑square‑foot minimum lots) to R‑8 (8,000‑square‑foot minimum lots), a change Planning Director Sarah Penley said would allow demolition of a structure in poor repair and support new single‑family homes.
"The property presents a unique shape and size, with approximately 1.61 acres to be potentially developed within an established residential community," Penley told the council, adding that staff supports approval because the change would improve economic self‑sufficiency, enhance walkability to the Central Business district and support a range of housing types.
The Town of Stanley Planning Board voted unanimously to recommend approval at its April 21 meeting. Council Member Leigh Anna Helms made the motion to approve the rezoning; Council Member Drew Stewart seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.
The rezoning permits uses allowed in the R‑8 district under the Town of Stanley Zoning Ordinance and follows the Comprehensive Land Use Plan, staff said. The council did not attach special conditions to the approval.
